When your child enrols with us, the appropriate ability group is determined using our online ability matrix based on the following guidelines:
This group is for children aged 3 years and over who are unable to swim without support or buoyancy aids, such as armbands or woggles. The main aims are to develop water confidence; kicking and flotation skills; and learning to cover a width of the learner pool without buoyancy aids.
Within this group, swimmers will cover the Duckling Awards within the ASA Foundation Framework and Stage 1 of the ASA Learn to Swim Framework.
This group is for children who are confident in the water and are able to swim short distances independently and without the use of flotation aids. The main aims are to develop front and back crawl strokes and introduce breathing skills.
Within this group, swimmers will cover stages 2 and 3 of the ASA Learn to Swim Framework.
This group is for children capable of swimming at least 10 metres front and back crawl, demonstrating effective breathing skills, good over arm recovery and a streamlined body position. Children must also have an understanding of breaststroke leg kick and be confident in deeper water.
Within this group, swimmers will cover stages 4 and 5 of the ASA Learn to Swim Framework.
This group is for children with defined techniques across all four strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly). They must be able to maintain their skills for a minimum of 25 metres for at least three strokes, and be able to swim breaststroke and butterfly for at least 10 metres.
Within this group, swimmers will cover: stages 6 and 7 of the ASA Learn to Swim Framework and Stage 8 of the ASA Aquatics Skills Framework for Competitive Swimming.
Lessons within all ability groups last for 30 minutes.
